It seems that America’s youth aren’t all that interested in the 2008 Olympic Games, according to Y-Pulse.
It’s not all that surprising…I know I’m not necessarily filled with anticipation of what will happen in Bejing. That said, here is what I’m planning to follow:
1. The “Redeem Team” – men’s basketball. The US hasn’t won an Olympic or FIBA gold medal since 2000. I’m hopeful that Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade, et al can re-establish the USA as a basketball power.
2. Lolo Jones – women’s 110 hurdles. Grew up in Des Moines…went to Roosevelt high school. She’s a long-shot to win her event, but you only have to watch for about 11 seconds to find out how she did.
3. Shawn Johnson – women’s gymnastics. The top-ranked gymnast in the world for the past 18 months. Some are calling her the next Mary Lou Retton…and she lives and trains in West Des Moines. (Cool video of Shawn on the Today Show…a friend of ours is on the balance beam at the 2:48 mark.)
4. The Medal Count. Probably the most contrived, least representative way to measure a country’s impact at the games…and yet NBC will regularly update viewers on who is winning the medal count.
Are you looking forward to the Games? If so, what are you most excited about?
